Tutorial - colors.
Learn how to get the coloring on:
&

This tutorial is for photoshop only. While I don't doubt that you can do it in PSP or anything else, I have no idea how to go about doing that. :)

1. First, get your base image. I'm using a cap from The Last Unicorn, although I honestly can't remember who it's from. Sorry!

2. Duplicate your background layer, set it to soft light.

3. Go to Image > Mode > Lab Color, and set your coloring. When prompted, do not flatten your image.

4. Make sure your layer/channels/paths palette is visible, and select "Channels" from the tabs. Select channel a, and hit control (or apple) + shift + L to do an auto-layer adjustment. Do the same for layer b, click on the "Lab" layer, and look at your results. This is also when you re-select RGB color from the Image > Mode menu. Again, do not flatten your image.

5. Results so far:

6. While it's perfectly fine with some images to leave as is and go to the cropping/sharpening stage, I think this image needs to be fine-tuned. For this image specifically, I did the following:

-- Duplicate your background layer, set it to hue at 33% opacity.
-- Duplicate your background layer, set it to color at 61% opacity.
-- Make a dark red exclusion layer, #3B0606.
-- Duplicate your background layer, set it to soft light at 100% opacity.
-- Crop as you like, sharpen the bottom and top layers.

7. Results!

This is a very fascinating way to get bright, sharp, shiny colours. It doesn't work for every image, but I like it a lot. Thank you!
